Event Details

J. B. MacKinnon’s work has appeared in the New Yorker, National Geographic, and the Atlantic, as well as the Best American Science and Nature Writing anthologies. He is the author of four books of non-fiction, including the bestselling Plenty (with Alisa Smith) and is widely recognized as a catalyst of the local foods movement.

The Day the World Stops Shopping began with the author asking the question, What would really happen if we simply stopped shopping? Addressing the paradox of consumerism -- that what moves the world’s economy also harms the earth – MacKinnon traveled around the world seeking answers from America’s big box stores to hunter-gatherer cultures of Namibia. Then COVID hit, and the thought experiment started happening in real time.
